A Long-Time Athens Resident with Georgia Roots
Alan is a Rockdale County native who has lived in Athens for many years, becoming a highly engaged member of the community. He first lived in Athens as a student, earning his undergraduate degree in Journalism and Public Relations from the University of Georgia.
Alan went on to pursue a career in the law, earning his J.D., summa cum laude, from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta. As a student, he clerked for Georgia Supreme Court Justice Hugh Thompson.
Focus on Workers’ Compensation, Personal Injury, and Wrongful Death Cases
In 1998, Alan launched his legal career. He currently practices law at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts, with experience in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, New Jersey, and Utah.
As a member of the State Bar of Georgia, he is authorized to practice at all levels in the state court system, including the Court of Appeals of Georgia and the Georgia Supreme Court.
At the federal level, he is authorized to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Since 2003, Alan has either worked as a solo practitioner or managed his own law firm. He focuses his practice exclusively on helping clients with workers’ compensation and personal injury cases, including cases involving the wrongful death of a loved one.
Due to his experience, Alan and our legal team at R. Alan Cleveland, LLC, can help clients with a broad range of workers’ compensation and personal injury claims, including cases that involve:
A Record of Results for Injury Victims and Families
Alan’s record reflects his hard work and dedication to pursuing compensation that will allow his clients to move forward after they have suffered serious injuries due to others’ wrongdoing. It includes multiple multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements, including:
- $72 million dog bite case verdict
- $9.85 million wrongful death verdict in a daycare drowning case.
Client-Centered Approach to Personal Injury and Workers’ Compensation Cases
When you work with Alan and our legal team, you won’t be treated like your case is just another file on the desk. Instead, you can count on working with a firm that makes it a priority to build long-lasting relationships with clients.
As part of Alan’s philosophy, our law firm:
- Provides free initial consultations – We don’t want cost to be a barrier for you when it comes to learning about your legal rights and options. An initial consultation is confidential and carries no obligations.
- Prepares cases for trial – From the outset, we treat every case as if it is going to trial, including identifying and interviewing witnesses, preserving and gathering critical evidence (including medical records), and consulting with highly knowledgeable professionals in areas such as health care, accident reconstruction, and vocational rehabilitation. Our thorough preparation gives leverage in settlement negotiations.
- Communicates clearly with clients – Alan believes that consistent, open, and clear communication with our clients is the key to pursuing full and fair compensation. We take the time to learn about your and its impact on your life and to understand your needs, concerns, and goals.
- Offers contingency fee agreements – We realize that few people can afford to pay upfront for legal services in workers’ compensation, personal injury, and wrongful death cases. With contingency fee agreements, you will pay no legal fees unless we recover compensation for you.
Appreciation of Former Clients
The care, attention, and dedication to pursuing results that Alan gives our clients has not gone unrecognized. We’re proud that many clients over the years have provided testimonials about their experience of working with Alan and our team.
For instance, one former client, “Jamie,” writes that Alan “made what was a nightmare experience into the best happy ending.”
“Straight shooter with the interests of the client being top priority. With one meeting, I knew I had the best trial lawyer in Georgia. And I never even got to a trial,” according to Jamie. “His staff was just as attentive to my needs. I was always in constant communication with his office and always received a call back within 24 hours. If not the same day. They never made me feel like I was too needy. Always eager to make ME understand what was going on. In fact, they called me more than I called them for updates.
“He never promised me anything that was unattainable. His interest and care were genuine. I have no regrets about my decision. I highly recommend him.”
Dedication to Continuing Legal Education and Dispute Resolution
Alan is dedicated to both the practice and study of law. He is a 2004 graduate of Gerry Spencer’s Trial Lawyers College, a renowned, intensive training academy held on its namesake’s Wyoming ranch that focuses on advanced trial skills. He also belongs to numerous local, state, and national legal organizations, including:
Often, Alan receives invitations to share his experience, knowledge, and practical insights with fellow attorneys at continuing legal education seminars.
Additionally, he is a registered neutral with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution who obtained his mediator certification from the University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute of Leadership Development.
He is a highly engaged member of the Athens community. He was appointed by the Athens-Clarke County Commissioners to the Development Authority, and he has volunteered with Historic Athens, supporting the preservation of local heritage.
He also serves on the seven-member Athens-Clarke County Historic Preservation Commission, which is composed of community residents appointed by the Mayor and Commission for three-year terms. In his role, Alan participates in the Commission’s monthly meetings, reviews applications for Certificates of Appropriateness, and provides recommendations regarding the protection of the counties’ historic resources.
Additionally, our law firm served as the presenting sponsor of the recent “The Law on Trial” film series at the historic Ciné venue in downtown Athens, featuring films exploring legal themes such as justice, power, and the people who stand behind truth and consequence, and Q&A sessions with panels of judges and lawyers.
